7 Tips for Starting a Car Wash

Starting a car wash business isn't just about putting up a "Car Wash" sign. It's a business with great potential that, if you know how to get started right, can be a game-changer in your life!
Here are the 7 most important points to get you started:

1. Define your business model.

Traditional car wash, car detailing, mobile car wash, or self-service? Each model has its advantages. Define your approach from the start based on the type of customer you want to attract and the resources you have available.

If you've never done it before and are about to start, I recommend you begin with a "Traditional Wash" to start growing your client base and then sell them a deeper and more expensive detailing service.

2. Strategic location.

Location is everything. Look for an area with high traffic, easy access, and good visibility. If you're doing house calls, make sure you have a tidy and well-equipped operational base.

If you do it at home, make sure you have enough space so that the sun is not an impediment.

3. Invest in quality products.

Using professional car detailing products like pH-neutral shampoos, degreasers, ceramic coatings, and interior conditioners will set you apart from the competition. Customers notice the difference when the products are high-quality (because it really shows in the shine and finish).

4. Ongoing training.

Knowing how to wash cars isn't enough. (From the beginning) Learn about detailing techniques, drying times, and how to treat different surfaces. A well-trained car wash is a more profitable business with fewer mistakes.

5. Take care of the presentation and cleanliness of the business.

Your workspace speaks for you. Keep your premises clean, always presentable, and have your tools organized. (This also saves time and prevents you from searching for them at the last minute.) First impressions count, and if the place looks neglected, many won't return.

6. Manage your costs and prices well.

Many people ask me, "How much do you charge?"
But that literally depends on you and the value you want to give to your work.

Calculate all your costs (water, supplies, time, wages, rent) to set fair but profitable prices. Many car washes fail because they don't know the true cost of each wash.

Here are 3 topics to review to calculate your costs:

  • Analyze your area: How many car washes are there? Are you the only one? Is someone else already offering the same service as you? Be honest and answer: How well do you do your job?

  • Do the math: And I don't just mean money, calculate everything. How long does it take to wash a car? How much product did you use? How much water was used per car? How often will you need to change your brushes and microfiber cloths?
  • Fixed costs: Your final cost increases by a small percentage to cover rent, water, electricity, equipment, maintenance, taxes, gasoline if you offer delivery, advertising, etc. Often, we don't take these fixed expenses into account, and this can lead to bankruptcy.

7. Local and Digital Marketing.
Even if you're on the busiest corner, if you don't make noise, nobody will see you. Use social media, promotions, and QR codes on flyers to
attract more customers and build loyalty.

Are you ready to take the plunge and start a business with a bang? Remember, a good car wash isn't just about cleaning well... it's about leaving a lasting impression and making customers want to come back!

3 Tips for providing better service.

  • Add a little something extra: We all love gifts, and what could be better than arriving to find your car spotless and also receiving a complimentary treat along with a business card from the car wash?

  • The customer is your priority: Treat them as you would like to be treated, answer their questions, ask if they liked the finish.

  • Do more: If you see that their trunk is a mess and has things like clothes or bottles in it, in addition to cleaning, organize them in a box or bag (the customer will appreciate it). If their glasses were on the floor, place them in the sun visor or cup holder...

These points are key to a quality service, they are practical, put them into practice and you will see how your customers will increase.
